I enjoyed the opportunity to drive the solar car in April 2009. It was very nice to use such a quiet and environmentally friendly vehicle. With the abundant sunshine in Bonaire, solar power makes a lot of sense.
I drove around town, and was able to give lifts to and from the hotel for several other people in our dive group. At one point we had 4 people in the vehicle, which handled well.
The only problem was on windy days, going around a curve and having the wind come off the ocean and hit the vehicle broadside made it a bit tippy.
So a less top heavy, lower to the ground vehicle with a suspension would be preferred for the open road.
You had to be very careful of any speed bumps in the road, and take them very very slowly.

Thank you for the opportunity to drive the solar car, it was awesome to drive around knowing you can't get much more eviro friendlier than that. We spent about 3 hours around Kralendijk enjoying the quietness of the vehicle and the ease to move in and around traffic. Acceleration was surprisingly quick, and speed was adequate. The only problems we had was with the wind that day, speed was greatly reduced when driving into the wind and power consumption was up because of that. The other thing we noted was it is a little rough, a suspension would make a lot of difference. Both my wife and I commented it would be perfect to own on this island. The only other thing would be to install a newer and improved solar panel. Congratulations and thank you to AB Carrental for taking the initiative to put such a vehicle out for public use and testing.

Thank you AB Carrental for allowing me to test drive your new solarcar.
I would like to commend AB Carrental for making a commitment to bring such an eco friendly vehicle to Bonaire. It makes perfect sense for such a beautiful place.
I drove the vehicle for approximately three hours to the southern end of the island and found it was ideal for me to take pictures from with its open driving compartment. I am a disabled person so I could drive it onto the rocky areas off road to get a good angle for many great photographs. The car has great torque so driving on the rough terrain & over rocks & coral was never a problem.
If I had to make a few suggestions to improve it usability I would recommend
• a speedometer & odometer so that you could know how far you have travelled as well as how far you can expect to go on the charge
• A couple of grab bars to make it easier to get in and out
• Perhaps a softer suspension
• Remove the hand operated wiper blade (or install an electric motor on it)
• Secure both back & front windshields to keep them from flexing and hitting the body as they make a lot of noise which takes away from its silent running
• Maybe remove the rear facing seat to allow for carrying scuba gear or design a seat that could be flipped open for a dual use depending on if you need to carry cargo (scuba gear or groceries) or passengers. Something that you could lock would be even better.
These are just some suggestions help with developing a better car for the future.
Overall I found it to be a very positive experience similar to driving a bike with the wind & sun hitting my face as I drove along. The speed & range was adequate but another 10 kph faster and maybe an extra 10 km range would make it more use full, but it would be great for a local person to use to run into town for groceries or dinner or errands etc. With the solar panels on the roof it would be recharging as it sits parked.
Thank you AB Carrental for having the insight to bring in this vehicle and allowing me to take it for a drive... I loved it!
